Clostridial ocular infections. Case report of gas gangrene panophthalmitis.

چکیده
Introduction THERE has been recent interest in the ophthalmological and general medical literature on the prophylactic treatment of tetanus. However, tetanus is only one disease caused by the spore-forming, Gram-positive, obligate, anaerobic rods known as the Clostridia. In addition to tetanus this group of pathogens also causes gas gangrene and botulism. The most common offenders of this species are the group causing gas gangrene. This paper presents a recent case of panophthahnitis caused by Clostridia perfringens, the commonest of these organisms. In addition, the subject of ocular clostridial infections in general is reviewed, and how they specifically affect the eye.

Gas gangrene infection of the eyes and orbits.
The literature on Clostridium perfringens infections is reviewed up to 1983. An additional case is reported with bilateral clostridial infections of the eye and orbit. One eye followed the classical course of relentless panophthalmitis, amaurosis, and orbital cellulitis ending in enucleation. The second eye contained intracameral mud and gas bubbles that were removed by vitrectomy instrumentati...
متن کاملBacillus cereus panophthalmitis associated with intraocular gas
It has become increasingly apparent that Bacillus cereus can cause a severe and devastating form of endophthalmitis following penetrating trauma by a metallic object. B. cereus is an uncommon aetiological agent in non-clostridial gas-forming infections. The patient studied in this single case report showed evidence of intraocular gas mimicking gas gangrene infection. The physiology of non-clost...

BACKGROUND Clostridium perfringens is the most common causative organism of gas gangrene, a necrotizing infection of soft tissue classically associated with traumatic injuries. Recently, awareness of its occurrence in spontaneous nontraumatic contexts has been increasing. The authors report an unusual case of nontraumatic/spontaneous C perfringens gas gangrene localized to the adnexae. CASE A...
متن کاملA rare case of orbital mucormycosis with gas gangrene panophthalmitis.
Mucormycosis is a disease caused by a fungus from the Phycomycetes class and the Mucorales order. Phycomycetes are ubiquitous fungi occurring in soil, air, skin, body orifices, manure, and food. They are commonly seen in diabetics, particularly in patients with ketoacidosis.'" Numerous other predisposing conditions have been reported.2 36 Gas gangrene refers to a necrotising infection of the so...
